Protogeometrie. Elemente der Grundlagen der Geometrie als Theorie räumlicher Figuren.

Protogeometry. Elements of the foundations of geometry as a theory of spatial figures.

  • Part I presents a new “functional-operative” approach to protogeometry. Therefore it builds explicitelly on a pregeometric terminology formulating operationally controlled relationships between figures on physical bodies. An effort aimed at clarifying the main issues and at determining the straight line and the plane surface as “forms” of figures is put forward. The final chapter discusses thoroughly the methodical relationship between protogeometry and axiomatic geometry. Trying to establish a tradition of protogeometric questions part II presents some historic-critical studies on relevant contributions from Aristoteles up to the protophysics of the Erlangen School. In part III the common treatment of the elementary geometric concepts (straight line, plane surface) in school and at the university level is examined and basic shortcomings are pointed out. A critical review of the work on operational geometry focusing on educational issues follows. After a discussion of protogeometric influenced teaching concepts on introducing elementary geometric notions at school some extensions and improvements are put forward. In the final chapter is argued that the “operative phenomenology” of the protogeometric approach and the “didactical phenomenology” by H. Freundenthal are related efforts. At the end an integrative view by didactics and philosophy of geometry is suggested.
