ValiDE Handbook

  • The ValiDE Handbook is a comprehensive resource for integrating values and democracy education into teacher training programs. It consolidates the key findings and outputs from the ValiDE project, providing practical tools, theoretical insights, and best practices for educators, NGOs, and policymakers. The handbook is organized into four main sections: 1. Curriculum Analysis and Theoretical Foundations – This section presents the findings from the cross-national analysis of curricula and policy papers in Germany, Poland, and Norway. It outlines the theoretical basis for value education and highlights the need for a shared framework for democratic teaching, providing a common reference for educators. 2. Empirical Study and Evaluation Tools – This section includes the results of the empirical studies on teacher students' value attitudes, self-assessment tools, and evaluation instruments developed during the project. It features logbooks, self-assessment forms, and scenario reflections in multiple languages (English, German, Norwegian, Polish) to support continuous professional development and reflective teaching practices. 3. Teaching Materials and Didactic Approaches – This section offers a comprehensive collection of teaching materials for primary school educators. It includes strategies for democratic value education, quality criteria for OER, and best practices for creating high-quality teaching scenarios. The section also presents didactic approaches developed in collaboration with NGO partners, emphasizing the importance of experiential learning. 4. Study Course and Best Practices – This final section provides a step-by-step guide for implementing international study courses, including organizational advice, lessons learned, and practical tips for integrating democratic education into teacher training. It also includes examples of workshops conducted during the LTTAs, self-study modules, and digital resources for supporting student exchange programs. Together, these sections form a comprehensive toolkit for educators seeking to promote democratic values, critical thinking, and intercultural understanding in their classrooms.
